The Discrepancy Between Photos and Memories
There is a discrepancy between photographs and memories. The act of recalling the past often necessitates bypassing the most crucial aspects. For me, a photograph is not so much about capturing the truth but rather about capturing traces of light with a camera—akin to the nature of a "photograph." We do not recall the past by looking at photos; instead, we overlay our memories onto these traces of light, seeing something that deviates from the past.
This work involves photographing the surface of Lake Haruna and creating risograph prints from these images. During the printing process, I separated the data into CMYK and RGB layers and applied various colors to each layer. I experimented by repeatedly overlaying the same color, combining multiple colors, inverting them, or layering prints of other photographs. The process was intuitive and spontaneous, much like improvisational dance, allowing the images at hand to guide me.
The discrepancies that emerged through this process transcended my intentions, with elements interacting and resonating with each other or canceling each other out. I am eager to explore what lies beyond these waves and deepen my understanding of this dynamic interplay.
The submerged princess and the idealized print play in the lake.
Lake Haruna holds the legend of Princess Kibe’s tragic drowning. In sorrow after the lord’s death, she submerged into Lake Haruna, only to reappear as a mighty serpent before sinking once more. Yet, this tale isn’t a sad one; its allure lies in the princess transforming into a serpent. While I don’t appreciate stories that paint someone’s death as a tragedy, this inexplicable legend intrigued me.
I captured the lake surface where the princess:serpent sinks and printed it with colorful waves, ensuring it doesn’t turn into a tragedy.
