1800×1800mm 縫合した写真紙 2024 東京都美術館（東京）
本作は、私たちが普段の移動中にカメラで撮影した写真と、その写真をPhotoshop上で生成拡張した画像を、それぞれ印刷しミシンで縫い合わせた縫合写真です。
2023年9月、Photoshopに画像生成AIサービスを応用した「生成拡張」の機能が追加され、テキストプロンプトを利用し画像コンテンツを非破壊で追加、拡大、削除できるようになりました。それは一見すると魔法のようで便利な機能です。しかし、私たちは自らが撮った写真を生成拡張した時、違和感を感じました。なぜなら生成拡張した後の画像には、撮る側がファインダーを覗いた先にある実在する世界と、生成拡張によってシームレスに広がった実在しない世界の、2つの相容れない世界が共存していたからです。つまり写真を生成拡張すると同時に、その写真からリアリティが失われ、フィクションになっているのです。私たちは、そこに”非破壊”とされる画像の破壊が存在するのかもしれないと考えました。
本作において縫合する行為は、生成拡張によって一方的に隠されてしまった実在する世界とフィクションの境界線をアナログ的に繋いでいます。それは、私たちの記録でも記憶でも無い生成拡張した画像を、デジタルネイチャーに向かう今の時代の記録として、私たちの撮った写真と並列に扱うことでもあります。そんな私たちが生きる今の違和感を記録し考える作品を目指しています。
This artwork features sutured photographs, created by printing and sewing together images we captured during our daily commutes and those generated and extended using Photoshop. In September 2023, Photoshop introduced the "Generative Expand" feature, which applies AI to non-destructively add, enlarge, or remove image content based on text prompts. While this functionality may seem like a magical convenience at first, it introduced a sense of discomfort when applied to our photographs. This discomfort arises from the coexistence of two irreconcilable worlds: the real world, as seen through the viewfinder, and the fictitious world seamlessly extended by AI. By extending a photograph, its reality is transformed into fiction, suggesting a potential form of destruction within what is labeled as "non-destructive" editing.
In this work, the act of suturing analogously connects the boundary between the real world, concealed by generative expansion, and the fictional world. This process elevates the generated images, which are neither our records nor our memories, to be considered on par with the photographs we took. This reflects the documentation of our current era, which is increasingly leaning towards a digital nature. Our goal is to capture and reflect on the discomfort we feel in living through this contemporary experience.
